The scheme is open to over 1,600 youth groups and clubs, with an estimated 90,000 club members around the country. The primary focus of the scheme is to assist volunteer-led youth clubs that provide a programme of youth work activities for young people. Clubs that work with young people but are not specifically providing youth work may also be eligible to apply under the scheme.
These grants are made available to all youth clubs and groups through the local Education and Training Boards (ETBs). The scheme, which is open to new entrants, will be advertised locally and applications for funding will be invited by the ETBs from local groups in their respective areas. Each ETB will be advertising the scheme on their website over the coming months.
Minister for Children and Youth Affairs , Dr. Katherine Zappone expressed confidence that the additional monies being allocated would positively impact on the lives of young people. She said:
“In every part of the country which I have had the opportunity to visit, I have seen at first hand the important impact that youth clubs have on local communities and the lives of young people who attend these clubs. These clubs are providing adventure, activities and opportunities for our young people.
The impact of small clubs working on the ground is huge, reaching practically every community in the country – and is deserving of Government support.
Through their efforts, young people are developing their talents, skills and experiences which will make them leaders of the future.
This additional funding will mean a greater volume of volunteer-led youth activities over the next year, which is a priority for my Department. I encourage every volunteer club or group to check locally for application details and see how it can benefit their work.”

The scheme has been designed to support youth work activities at a local level, with priority given to clubs/groups catering for young people aged 10-21. The scheme is open to all local youth clubs/groups that fulfil the eligibility criteria of the Local Youth Club Grant Scheme.

Blackrock Further Education Institute & Erasmus+ Learning Opportunities
/in Corporate News /by Jennifer FarleyFive Blackrock Further Education Institute students of Information Technology have recently returned from the beautiful city of Utrecht in the Netherlands having successfully completed a mandatory two week work experience placement as part of their QQI level 5 major award. Working with BFEI’s partner, ROC Midden, the students who are currently studying Games Design and Development, Computer Science and Web Design and Digital Media, were assigned to Success Media, a digital media company.
During their placement Cian, Jack, Rajendr, Evan and Seán Óg were given an opportunity to practice and develop their web authoring and design skills. They also enjoyed developing their WordPress and search engine optimisation skills. And when work ended at 5pm each day, there was plenty of opportunities to explore the cultural and social aspects of this very vibrant city. Cian Cusack described it as the “best experience of my life” while Jack Landy reported that the “whole experience has given my confidence a huge boost”.
Léargas, as the National Agency for supporting international exchange and collaboration, provided the funding to cover the cost of flights, accommodation, and day to day living expenses for all participants. The positive impact on the students has been considerable. They have thoroughly enjoyed the experience of living, learning and working abroad. They have had a unique opportunity to enhance their technical and professional skills thus enhancing their employability. Living away from home for the first time has greatly enhanced their self-confidence and independence. Evan Doyle wisely advised that “any student who gets the opportunity to participate in Erasmus+ should take it”!
BFEI is still relatively new to Erasmus+ projects, having successfully completed their first student mobility project only last year. The plan for the future is to expand our involvement so students studying with us in all disciplines can have the opportunity to experience this unique learning experience.

National Geography Award for Sadhbh Nevins of Donabate Community College
/in Corporate News /by Jennifer FarleyThe 2018 Gwenda Hurst Memorial Medal has been awarded to Donabate Community College past pupil Sadhbh Nevins, who sat her Leaving Certificate last June. Each year, the Association of Geography Teachers of Ireland selects the most meritorious paper in the Leaving Certificate Geography examination for the award. In total 23,326 students sat the Leaving Certificate Geography examination in 2018 and of these 636 students scored a H1 at higher level. Sadhbh managed to receive the highest result in the country.
Sadhbh and her teacher, Ms. Fiona Cuskelly, along with Sadhbh’s mother, Erika and sister, Avril, attended the award ceremony in Trinity College Dublin on Wednesday 13th March. Both Sadhbh and Ms Cuskelly were presented with medals to recognise this wonderful achievement.
During the award ceremony, Ms Cuskelly highlighted why Sadhbh was so deserving of the award. “I could see that Sadhbh had a passion for Geography after the first week of fifth year. Sadhbh’s commitment to her class work and study was admirable. She always strove for perfection. Every piece of work that she produced was completed with enthusiasm to a very high standard. I feel privileged to have taught Sadhbh. I’m going to take some credit in fostering her love of the subject and her choice to pursue it at third level. Sadhbh is an incredible role model for what you can achieve when you apply yourself. I know Sadhbh will continue to flourish while studying Geography and Sociology in Trinity College and I wish her all the success she deserves in her future endeavours”. President of the AGTI, Peter Lydon, commented that he believes Sadhbh is the first student to have won the award that has gone on to study Geography at third level.
Congratulations to Sadbh and Ms Cuskelly on their wonderful achievement from all at Dublin and Dún Laoghaire ETB.

Blanchardstown Youthreach Participant Is Finalist In Art & Photography Award

DDLETB awarded patronage of two new primary schools for Swords, Co. Dublin

The Department of Education and Skills has informed DDLETB that the Swords community has endorsed our state-run Community National School model. The planned new schools for Swords are scheduled to open in September 2019 and DDLETB expects that the Principals will be appointed shortly to lead the new schools.
Paddy Lavelle, Chief Executive of DDLETB said, “This is a very positive development for Swords. The new schools will join six other Community National Schools under our patronage. We see the results of this campaign as a welcome endorsement, from parents and families, for ETB run schools and the Community National School model. “We ran a highly visible and engaging campaign in Swords. Parents clearly supported our vision for child-centred, multidenominational, publicly-accountable schools which strive to provide high-quality education for all learners. They give equal opportunities to all children,” added Lavelle.”
“The new schools in Swords will be technologically advanced using the latest Information and communication technologies. These new schools will further embed our presence on the educational landscape especially in the North-Dublin region,” said Adrian Flynn, Director of Schools with DDLETB.“Our vision is to continue to develop teaching and learning communities that lead
educational thinking both nationally and internationally. We are excited about our shared future with new learners and teachers in Swords. We are now taking this message to Citywest/Saggart, Blanchardstown and Goatstown/Stillorgan for our 2020 post-primary patronage campaign” added Flynn.

QQI Certificates Presented To Air Corps Staff
/in Corporate News /by Jennifer FarleyDDLETB Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) pilot project – QQI certificates presented to staff from the Air Corps in Lucan Education Centre on 17th January.
Congratulations to the RPL participants and to the RPL team in Lucan.
This is a pilot project in Recognition of Prior Learning for DDLETB. The Adult Education Service Southwest is partnering with the Air Corps in a nationwide ETB / Defence Forces collaboration in RPL.
The recognition of prior learning process allows learners to gain certification for their on-the-job learning without having to attend a course in what they already know. The RPL project staff in Lucan supported the group to identify and document their on-the-job learning and to compile RPL portfolios for assessment. The structured supports included an induction day, adult education guidance and a series of mentoring sessions last Spring and early Autumn.
Participants received QQI component certificates in subjects relating to their work roles. The recipients acknowledged the importance to them of having formal recognition of their learning. For some their certificates will be beneficial in finding alternative employment opportunities as they retire out of the Air Corps. For others, the certification, as well as the whole experience, has sparked an interest in engaging anew with education and training.
Thank you to the Adult Education Service and to the Air Corps for their keen support of this pilot project.
