QQI Certificates Presented To Air Corps Staff

Air Corps DDLETB

DDLETB Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) pilot project – QQI certificates presented to staff from the Air Corps in Lucan Education Centre on 17th January.

Congratulations to the RPL participants and to the RPL team in Lucan.

This is a pilot project in Recognition of Prior Learning for DDLETB. The Adult Education Service Southwest is partnering with the Air Corps in a nationwide ETB / Defence Forces collaboration in RPL.

The recognition of prior learning process allows learners to gain certification for their on-the-job learning without having to attend a course in what they already know. The RPL project staff in Lucan supported the group to identify and document their on-the-job learning and to compile RPL portfolios for assessment. The structured supports included an induction day, adult education guidance and a series of mentoring sessions last Spring and early Autumn.

Air Corps DDLETB

Participants received QQI component certificates in subjects relating to their work roles. The recipients acknowledged the importance to them of having formal recognition of their learning. For some their certificates will be beneficial in finding alternative employment opportunities as they retire out of the Air Corps. For others, the certification, as well as the whole experience, has sparked an interest in engaging anew with education and training.

Thank you to the Adult Education Service and to the Air Corps for their keen support of this pilot project.

International Day At Blanchardstown Adult Education Service

The VTOS students from the Understanding Interculturalism class at Blanchardstown Adult Education Service organised an International Day which took place on 18 December 2018. The main aim of the event was to help students and staff experience other cultures. As food is an important component of culture and it often plays a central role in celebrations, it was decided to build the day around this.

The room was decorated with a Christmas theme and some students wore clothes which reflected their cultural background. Some of the dishes presented that day were: Irish stew, keks (cake from Poland), dolma (stuffed grape leaves) from Iraq, cheesecake from Lithuania, couscous from Morocco and isku-dhex-karis (a Somalian rice dish).

The students who organised the event were delighted with the numbers of people who attended and with the variety of dishes on offer. Everyone agreed it was a lovely way to finish off the year and pave the way for the Christmas holidays!

Blanchardstown Adult Education Service is part of the Further Education and Training services provided by Dublin and Dún Laoghaire ETB.

Cambridge Assessment English Language Exams in Riversdale Community College

In May 2018, migrant students and parents from Riversdale CC sat Cambridge Assessment English language exams. While parents and students attended separate classes to prepare them for the exams, they came together to receive their certs.

The cohort of 29 parents and students from Riversdale CC sat a combination of four Cambridge Assessment English exams: A2 Key (KET), B1 Preliminary and B1 Preliminary for Schools as well as B2 First for Schools.

This initiative shows that the DDLETB DEIS school is working hard to support access to the curriculum for the young people in their school as well as to support the social inclusion and lifelong learning of their parents. The photo shows some of the students who have received their certs with the teachers who prepared them to sit the exams as well as the school principal Bernadette McLoughlin.

Congratulations to all of the students who worked so hard and their teachers who supported them.

Adam’s project, which was entitled ‘Optimizing The Simulation Of General Quantum Circuits’ was praised by judges. Judge and Chair of the Chemical, Physical and Mathematics Category, Professor Sean Corish, said the winning entry hugely impressed the judges.

“Quantum computing is an emerging technology which represents a potentially significant advance in computing,” he said.

“Adam developed a tool to select the optimum algorithm for the simulation of particular quantum circuits, which may inform the development of a practical quantum computer, which is still at an early stage. This has implications across many areas, including cybersecurity.

“In addition, he used Open Source code to parallelise quantum simulation on graphical processing units that is significantly quicker than other available simulators and this work has already come to the attention of key industry leaders.

Adam received a cheque for €7,500 for winning and will go on to represent Ireland at the European Union Contest for Young Scientists in Bulgaria in September.

Vote Now For A New (Primary) Community National School In Your Area

Dublin and Dún Laoghaire Training Board have applied for the patronage of three new Community National School (CNS) 2019. Vote now for a school in your area.

On 8th November 2018, the Minister for Education and Skills, Joe McHugh, T.D., invited school patron bodies/prospective school patron bodies to apply for the patronage of 12 new primary schools to be established in September 2019.

Dublin and Dún Laoghaire ETB have applied to be the patron of three new (primary) Community National Schools in Blackrock-Booterstown, Goatstown-Stillorgan and Swords. The patron will be chosen by parents/guardians with children of eligible school age who live in these areas. They will do so by voting online on a patronage site provided by the Department.

Community National Schools (CNS) are child-centred, multidenominational, publicly-accountable schools which strive to provide high-quality education for every child. They give equal opportunities to all children in the communities they serve. They were established in 2008 and are managed by the Education and Training Boards (ETBs).

Do you want your local Community National school to be publicly owned, inclusive, multi-denominational creative and innovative?
We want to bring this CNS model, which has already established itself as powerful and effective – to Blackrock-Booterstown, Goatstown-Stillorgan and Swords.

A new online Patronage Process System has been developed to provide objective information to all parents and guardians which will allow them to make an informed choice in expressing a preference for their preferred model of patronage for their child’s education.

To register your choice and find out more about the patronage system click here.
