Adam’s project, which was entitled ‘Optimizing The Simulation Of General Quantum Circuits’ was praised by judges. Judge and Chair of the Chemical, Physical and Mathematics Category, Professor Sean Corish, said the winning entry hugely impressed the judges.

“Quantum computing is an emerging technology which represents a potentially significant advance in computing,” he said.

“Adam developed a tool to select the optimum algorithm for the simulation of particular quantum circuits, which may inform the development of a practical quantum computer, which is still at an early stage. This has implications across many areas, including cybersecurity.

“In addition, he used Open Source code to parallelise quantum simulation on graphical processing units that is significantly quicker than other available simulators and this work has already come to the attention of key industry leaders.

Adam received a cheque for €7,500 for winning and will go on to represent Ireland at the European Union Contest for Young Scientists in Bulgaria in September.

Vote Now For A New (Primary) Community National School In Your Area

Dublin and Dún Laoghaire Training Board have applied for the patronage of three new Community National School (CNS) 2019. Vote now for a school in your area.

On 8th November 2018, the Minister for Education and Skills, Joe McHugh, T.D., invited school patron bodies/prospective school patron bodies to apply for the patronage of 12 new primary schools to be established in September 2019.

Dublin and Dún Laoghaire ETB have applied to be the patron of three new (primary) Community National Schools in Blackrock-Booterstown, Goatstown-Stillorgan and Swords. The patron will be chosen by parents/guardians with children of eligible school age who live in these areas. They will do so by voting online on a patronage site provided by the Department.

Community National Schools (CNS) are child-centred, multidenominational, publicly-accountable schools which strive to provide high-quality education for every child. They give equal opportunities to all children in the communities they serve. They were established in 2008 and are managed by the Education and Training Boards (ETBs).

Do you want your local Community National school to be publicly owned, inclusive, multi-denominational creative and innovative?
We want to bring this CNS model, which has already established itself as powerful and effective – to Blackrock-Booterstown, Goatstown-Stillorgan and Swords.

A new online Patronage Process System has been developed to provide objective information to all parents and guardians which will allow them to make an informed choice in expressing a preference for their preferred model of patronage for their child’s education.

To register your choice and find out more about the patronage system click here.

DDL Youthreach Celebrates The Magic Of Maths

There are 11 Youthreach Centres across the Dublin and Dún Laoghaire region and each Centre participated in national Maths Week this year in the last week of October. Teachers and learners looked at how Maths is all around us and how essential numeracy skills are in life, learning and employment in the 21st Century.

To celebrate this, DDLETB held an exhibition of the learners’ work in its Head Office in Tallaght. The ‘We love Maths’ event took place on the morning of Thursday 25th October and to say we were blown away with the quality and variety of maths projects would be an understatement.

Each Youthreach Centre was represented by two or three learners, who showcased their projects on the exhibition stands. Staff from DDLETB and from partner organisations attended the exhibition to see the work and talk to the learners. Learners from each Centre gave a two-minute talk to the audience about what they did for Maths Week.

The overwhelming reaction from everyone who attended was how impressed they were, with the work produced by the students.

The Guest speaker on the morning was Dr Niamh Shaw, aspiring astronaut and one of Ireland’s leading science communicators.

CO Paddy Lavelle said of the event, ‘We are very proud of the hard work and achievements of our learners in Youthreach. Many people don’t have a positive attitude to Maths so the ‘We love Maths Event’ is a wonderful opportunity to showcase how our teachers in Youthreach are making Maths relevant and enjoyable for all our learners. We are also delighted that Dr Niamh Shaw has kindly agreed to be our guest speaker at the event.’

Register Your Interest For A New School In Your Community

Community National School KidsWe are currently seeking expressions of interest from parents or guardians who would like to have a Community National School in their area.

To show your interest, please fill in this short survey form here on the Community National School website.

The results of the survey will be used to provide information to the Department of Education and Skills when they are determining which patron would be most suitable to serve a particular area. We would love for that Patron to be the DDLETB.

Please note that if a Community National School does open in your area, parents/guardians will have to fill in a separate application form for this school as this survey is an expression of interest only.
