The Leaving Certificate Applied programme is being offered by eleven of County Dublin VEC’s second level schools: Balbriggan Community College, Castleknock Community College, Collinstown Park and Deansrath Community Colleges in Clondalkin, Fingal and St Finian’s Community Colleges in Swords, Firhouse and Mount Seskin Community Colleges in Tallaght, Greenhills Community College Walkinstown, Lucan Community College, and St Kevin’s Community College Fonthill. The LCA is a two-year Leaving Certificate available to students who wish to follow a practical programme with a strong vocational emphasis. The programme aims to recognise the talents of all students and provide opportunities for development in terms of responsibility, self-esteem and self-knowledge and to help students apply what they learn in the real world. It is an innovative programme in the way students learn, in what they learn and in the way th eir achievements are assessed.
To acknowledge and celebrate the work of Leaving Certificate Applied students, County Dublin VEC organised a display of their work in March 2012. The display was such a huge success that we are planning another display this year, on Thursday 7th
March, opening at 10.30 am at County Dublin VEC’s Head Office in Tallaght. Each of the County Dublin VEC schools
running LCA will exhibit examples of student work, showcasing their achievements in areas such as Art and Design, Woodwork, Metalwork, Catering and Contemporary Issues. The display will be visited by students, teachers and principals from across the VEC and by the County Dublin VEC committee.
At 12 pm the display will be formally launched. A past LCA student will speak of how much he enjoyed doing LCA and how it has stood him in good stead in his life and career. Other speakers will include a co-ordinator of the LCA programme in one of our colleges. A group of students will do a presentation on their experience of Leaving Certificate Applied. Dr. Marie Griffin CEO will present certificates to the participating schools. This will be followed by lunch, and the display will remain in place until 2 pm.
